About Chris Christy

Chris Christy

Not everyone has an 'eye' for photography - most of us rely upon professional photographers to provide us with the fluid dynamics of the perfect shot - the perfect lighting - the perfect image.

Chris definitely has the 'eye' for photography and his gallery proves it. Having the opportunity to travel and live in exotic places, Chris found a way to incorporate his hobby of photography and his love of travel into a business which he shares with everyone at his website imariba.com. His job as a professional fisheries economist required extensive traveling, which afforded him the opportunity to satisfy his desire of expressing himself through the camera lens. Kim Kirkpatrick, who helped him acquire the discipline he sorely needed, tutored Chris at the Smithsonian Institution. He later experienced a paradigm shift and left his job as a fisheries economist to pursue this art form full time. He presents his works of art to the world, not only offering customers insight to places he has traveled and lived in but also the opportunity to purchase and display unique moments in time.

"imariba"

The name of the website, imariba, was adopted by Chris on a trip he took to Croatia with his wife in the 1980’s. The people who lived there would stretch their arms far apart and say “ima riba” to indicate the size of the fish that could be found in the Gacka River. Chris and his wife continue to visit there annually.

imariba: Bringing You Glimpses of Life

Chris has traveled to Italy, Morocco, Senegal and Southeast Asia to bring you glimpses of life in small-scale fisheries and the communities that surround them. From the Malabar Coast, the Zhoushan Islands of China and to the banks of the Gacka River in Croatia, people and places have captured his attention as well as his heart. Chris has also lived in Rome, Italy while working as a fisheries economist, where he always took his camera along to document his travels. Visitors to his website are able to live vicariously through his photography.

Chris's Photography

Chris's photographic eye likes shadows, shapes, stairs, walls, courtyards, nature and people. His compositions make you focus on one subject in the picture. Studying the pictures to determine what he was thinking when he took the picture is fascinating. Chris has an eye for the unusual and unexpected beauty in simple objects, and his works are vibrant with colors from nature. You can enjoy his photos by single clicking on them or watching them in the form of a slide-show.

Photos

Chris takes all the photos himself, using 35mm Fuji Color Film. Photos are then printed using a matte finish with archival-pigmented inks. With this method of printing, the photographs will have a life span of more than 30 years. They are sold matted, using acid-free archival quality mats, unless the customer prefers them to be unmatted. If a mat is not needed, Chris offers a discount off the purchase price. Find the desired photo of choice and select “Buy” under the image. Once the print has been selected the next step is to choose the size of the print. The sizes are listed for each photo and they range from a 6 x 9 to a larger 12 x 18. Some of his earlier photos were taken with a Rolleiflex, and here the images are square.
